9. Memorial Park

In Europe of the 20th century and after the separation of church from the state, mourning passed from the religious sphere into the private one and urn burials were no longer a blasphemy. Already between the two wars, the cemetery passed from the church authority to the municipal one and thus became a part of the municipality. That is why municipalities are responsible for arranging and managing cemeteries. Particularly in the former socialist Yugoslavia, two types of funerals were known, civil and church ones.
Today, the cemetery called “The Memorial Park – The Old Ptuj City Cemetery” has been remodelled, yet it still represents a place for piety, remembering those buried here and for showing respect towards their relatives and all those who come to pay their tribute to the deceased. Let us preserve this place as a green oasis in the very centre of the city and prove that we are able to appreciate our past. For those who have no past, have no future.
The project was partially financed by the EU – the European Regional Development Fund, while part of the funds was obtained from the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning.
