14. Funeral parlour
The City Municipality began building the morgue in 1881 and already in 1883, it had to be renovated and upgraded and a dwelling for the gravedigger needed to be arranged.
Until 1895, when the city finally established its own funeral parlour, funeral services had been performed by various people who were granted a fixed-term concession by the city. The gravedigger job was relatively well-paid and among the applicants were gardeners, chimney sweepers as well as carpenters.
In 1894, the City Municipality began preparing the establishment of its own funeral parlour. They first gathered the necessary information on equipment, work and regulations. Then, they purchased a funeral cart and various other props. The following year (1895), a public funeral parlour was already established. They ordered a funeral cart, adopted the rules and registered the company.
In 1899, Ptuj City Municipality and the city parish of St. George arranged the ownership of the city cemetery and the morgue, which became the property of the municipality.
