7. The cross section
The central part of the cemetery is the area around the wooden cross with Christ Crucified from the 18th century. During funeral ceremonies and on the day of All Saints, here is where the mass took place and from where the parish priest performed the blessing of the graves. The city parish of St. George was taking care of the cross.
The central position of this area of the cemetery indicates that the graves of the clergy and the Sisters of Mercy are in its immediate vicinity. The graves of famous Ptuj bourgeois and artisan families are also located here.
The Sacerdotes Christi (the Servant of Christ) tombstone lists the names of the Ptuj priests, provosts, city parish priests and deans.
The city cemetery was getting too small, which is why in 1880, the municipality purchased a plot alongside the cemetery; in 1881, the city parish of St. George bought a plot measuring 302 acres, intended for the expansion of the cemetery. Before World War II, the city cemetery underwent another expansion in 1922.
