8. Under the treetops of false cypresses, thujas, ashes, cherries and magnolias
Plants of the park can tell many tales as the evergreen false cypresses and thujas are distinctive marks of remembrance. Before the renovation works started, all the existing trees underwent thorough inspection from which resulted a list of quite a big number of interesting species. Some were planted at the end of the 19th century. Many thujas and false cypresses have been preserved in the old part of the cemetery. There are also some deciduous trees, such as two huge ashes, a common ash, a sweet gum and a magnolia. Among the preserved monuments are planted great white Japanese cherries, while the protestant part contains Japanese or kobus magnolias. The creeping lesser periwinkle and Irish ivy climb the wall supporting the most ancient tombs in the cemetery. Some new trees and large shrubs also found their place in the Memorial Park, such as Jun berries and Chinese dogwoods that change colours following the seasons creating some visual effects and thus complete the feeling of compassion of the Memorial Park.
